Workshop of Frans Hals

The first version of this painting is preserved in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin (oil on panel, diameter 37.5 cm). The present composition has hitherto been regarded as a work by Frans Hals the Younger painted while he was in his father’s workshop. However, a general attribution to the master’s workshop, where apart from his son Hals also employed Judith Leyster and Jan Miense Molenaer, seems more appropriate. Since the Berlin painting seems to be part of a cycle of the Five Senses, it is likely that Frans Hals painted several versions of this popular series with the participation of his workshop. The present variant shows distinct deviations from the Schwerin version.
