Frans Francken II
(Antwerp 1581–1642)
The Israelites crossing the Red Sea,
oil on copper, 33 x 23 cm, framed
We are grateful to Dr Ursula Härting, Hamm, who has confirmed the authenticity of this painting on sight of the original to be an authentic work by Frans Franckens. A comprehensive certificate accompanies the picture.
This painting is a new discovery for Francken’s oeuvre. Dr Härting, author of the catalogue raisonné was previously unaware of its existence and considers it to be one of the most beautiful works by the Antwerp master. Francken demonstrates here the technical perfection of his execution and the elegance of his compositional skills. Alongside the technically demanding use of paint laid down in fine glazes, he never loses the spontaneity of his style, which ensures that the facial features of his main protagonists are impressive character studies. The artistic quality of this artist who is finally being appreciated by the market is also apparent in the combination of varying stylistic influences.
