This painting is a typical work by Salomon van Ruysdael, and is particularly impressive in the fine coloration of its foliage and its understated palette. His glittering, silvery foliage awaken associations of leaves fluttering in the light. The coloration which employs multi-faceted nuances of green, ochre and brown tones is characteristic of the monochrome landscape painting that was also cultivated in Holland in reference to Ruysdael in the circle around Jan van Goyen. Alongside Jan van Goyen, Ruysdael is considered to be the most important exponent of this school.
