Circle of Jan Fijt
(Antwerp 1611–1661)
Birds of prey in a chicken run,
oil on canvas, 186 x 252 cm, framed
Provenance:
Baron Léopold Lunden (d. 1921);
Baroness Germaine Lunden, née du Roy de Blicquy;
Baron Etienne Verhaegen (d. 1990);
Belgian aristocratic ownership.
A second version of this composition in a smaller format (161 x 232 cm) was auctioned at Fievez, Brussels, on 10.12.1928 as lot 29. Edith Greindl, Brussels, wrote to the then owner of the picture on 2.2.1956, that in her view this was an original work by Jan Fijt (“ce beau tableau de Fyt...”). Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, whom we thank for his kind assistance, considers this painting, listed at the RKD as RKDimage no. 17956, to be a contemporary copy after Jan Fijt. Meijer believes that the figure may be by Jacob Jordaens.
