Lot No. 734

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino and workshop

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino and workshop - Old Master Paintings

(Cento 1591–1666 Bologna)
The vision of St. Jerome,
oil on canvas, 40.6 x 49 cm, framed

Provenance:
Christie’s auction, London, 9.2.1968, lot 17 (as Guercino)

We are grateful to Prof Nicholas Turner, who has confirmed the authenticity of this work having examined the original as by Guercino and his workshop. There is a certificate for this painting.

The picture is a later version of a copper plate in the Louvre in Paris, executed in collaboration with Guercino’s workshop. Nicholas Turner discovered an earlier version executed in its entirety by Guercino in an Italian private collection. All three versions - the picture in the Louvre, the painting in Italy and this painting – share the same format. The latter differs from the other compositions in the altered position of the angel and his hand. Other differences can be found in elements of the background, the clouds and the silhouette of the landscape. The placement of the right knee of the saint is also different. The present painting is a vivid example of the continuing development of a motif in Guercino’s work and in the production of his workshop.
