Balthasar Beschey

Balthasar Beschey - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1708–1776)
The sermon of St. John the Baptist,
oil on panel, 54 x 70 cm, framed

Balthasar Beschey is the most important and best known of the family of five painter brothers. During his early years in Antwerp, he primarily executed landscapes in the tradition of the Brueghels. He would later turn to religious images and history painting, and would continue to be inspired by his great Antwerp forebears. It was here that he produced compositions of his own executed in a fine, smooth manner, making him one of the most significant painters in the early 18th century in Antwerp. He went on to be appointed dean of the Guild of Saint Luke and director of the Academy. This painting demonstrates Beschey’s technical virtuosity and bears testimony to his high status within 18th-century Flemish painting.
