Lot No. 190

Theodor Hörmann

(Imst 1840–1895 Graz) A Summer’s Day near Samois, “La brouillard sur la Seine”, on the reverse old handwritten label, Samois, pre Fontainebleau, indistinctly inscribed 104 (?), oil on canvas, 69 x 101 cm, craquelure, strip frame, (Rei)

Provenance: Direct family property.

Theodor von Hörmann
Landscape painter, and one of the most important exponents of Austrian Impressionism, attended the Academy in Vienna from 1873 to 1875. However, the inspiration for his art came less from his teachers, Eduard von Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach, as from his friendship with Emil Jakob Schindler and his study of the French impressionists which significantly influenced his work. Hörmann preferred to paint landscapes en plein air in the manner of the impressionists, and undertook countless study trips, particularly to France, where he studied and drew inspiration from modern art. He executed several paintings in Samois from where the present painting originates. His landscapes are distinguished by their lively brushstrokes and light application of colour, although not at the expense of his precise observations of nature.
