Catalogued in: Günther Probzt, Friedrich von Amerling, published by Amalthea Vienna, 1927, p. 147, no. 959

Friedrich Amerling, who was ennobled in 1878, is considered one of the 19th century’s most important portrait painters. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, starting in the engraving school before changing to the drawing class. During his sojourn in London he studied the work of Thomas Lawrence, who was of particular significance for Amerling’s portrait painting. Further travels to Paris, Munich, Rome and Spain followed. After returning to Vienna he built his reputation as a respected portrait painter to the middle classes and the imperial court. Amerling’s portraits are striking in their fresh and lively colouring, his subjects depicted in elegant poses yet without appearing distant.
