Hans Frederik Gude

Hans Frederik Gude - 19th Century Paintings

(Kristiania, Norway 1825 – 1903 Berlin) Scenic View of Traunsee, signed and dated HCF Gude (ligature) 1871, oil study on canvas, 18 x 29.5 cm, framed, craquelure, (Rei)

Hans Frederik Gude
studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1841 under Andreas Achenbach. A year later he moved to J. W. Schirmer’s master class to train in landscape painting. He continued his studies in Schirmer’s private studio until 1846. Gude made several study trips and lived for a period in Norway. In 1850 he returned to Düsseldorf and there, four years later, he succeeded Schirmer as head of landscape painting at the Academy. Further positions at the academies in Karlsruhe and Berlin followed. Influenced in the depiction of landscapes by Achenbach and Schirmer, Gude used the nature studies executed during his travels for his paintings of coasts and landscapes. The work here is probably a study for a series of views of Austrian lakes.
