Ernst Graner - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Werdau, Saxony 1865-1943 Vienna) Figures at St. Michael’s gate (in Vienna): Hercules freeing Prometheus (Josef Lax), Hercules and the girdle of Hippolytha (Hans Scherpe), Hercules Capturing and Bringing back Cerberus (Anton Paul Wagner), 3 studies, one signed E. Graner, watercolour on paper, each 28 x 13 cm and 25 x 11 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)

The Greek mythology is the predominent subject of the entire figural decoration at the Vienna Hofburg. There are eight sculptural groups of Hercules episodes in the former Habsburg residence, which were executed by artists of Historicism or the so-called younger Ringstraßen architects. Graner’s sketches show subjects of the Hercules legend on the right and left side of St. Michael’s gate: Johann Scherpe (1855-1929): Hercules retrieving the belt of Hippolyta (9th labour), Josef Lax (1851-1909): Hercules freeing Prometheus from being chained, Anton Paul Wagner (1834-1895): Hercules Capturing and Bringing back Cerberus from the underworld (12th labour)
