Josef Ritter von Führich

Josef Ritter von Führich - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Kratzau 1800-1876 Vienna) Christ falls the second time under the weight of the cross, study for the VIIth chapel of the way of the cross of the calvary on Saint Lawrence hill near Prague which was executed in 1836, pencil on paper, 76 x 50 cm, browned, mounted, framed, (Sch)The present drawing is related to Führich’s painting " Christ falls the second time under the weight of the cross " in the VIIth station along the way of the cross with 14 calvary chapels on Saint Lawrence’s hill (Laurenziberg) in Prague, which were made in 1836. The study may be a preliminary drawing for a series of prints which Führich made after the paintings; the engravings’ dimensions are 49 x 32 cm; the plate for station VII measures 34,5 x 25,3 cm. The depictions on the drawing and on the print are identical. The outlines of the figures in the drawing seem to stand out more than the ones in the print, whose figures were rendered more three-dimensionally through the hatchings added to the outlines.
