Lot No. 484

Anselm Kiefer *

(born 1945 in Donaueschingen) Les femmes de l‘antiquité, c. 2000, titled, spackling over photo, 73 x 50 cm, framed, (PP)

Provenance: Purchased by the previous owner from the artist’s studio. In his works Anselm Kiefer establishes ties with themes from time immemorial, as in the piece „Les femmes de l’antiquité“. His compositions deal with myths, spirituality, mysticism and the relationship of man to the earth and the cosmos. A woman‘s white dress stands in the centre of the composition although no one is wearing it. And yet a certain corporeality is communicated to the observer, one reminiscent of the women of ancient times. The entire composition is delicately coloured: white and bright ochre tones on blue-grey cover the surface area of the work. Fine dark lines run outwards in all directions from the upper part of the dress; they are interwoven like branches and contribute to the sense of spaciousness. Here Anselm Kiefer points to the primordial, to women and the way they are rooted with the universe.
