Literature: Flaminio Gualdoni, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Catalogo ragionato della Scultura, Milan, 2007, Vol. II, page 484, ill. 305 (here with the measurements 87 x 54.5 cm) Exhibition: Galleria L‘Isola, Rome, February 1986, Tridente dieci. Aspetti di arte-Gli anni cinquanta e gli anni sessanta (ill. in exhibition catalogue) At the beginning of the 1960’s Arnaldo Pomodoro modified his calligraphic reliefs and began to create large, three-dimensional forms with delicate interiors in which the tension created by opposing concepts and emotions becomes apparent. Pomodoro found a deep source of inspiration in the smooth and polished surfaces of the works of Brancusi, but their appearance simultaneously tempted him to break up and to destroy the perfection of the surface area. „(...) I insist that the sculpture surfaces be read carefully and slowly, even though, just a moment before, you saw the ensemble forms as essentially geometric and monumental, integrated with the flow of pedestrian traffic in the park. The detail in relief and mirror-polished surface give the viewer a great deal to look at, to capture and to hold the eye. I really want people to feel the works on an intimate basis as well as to see them monumentally.“ (Sam Hunter, Arnaldo Pomodoro, New York 1982, page 116) In contrast to many of his contemporaries, Arnaldo Pomodoro still uses the ancient technique of encaustic which allows direct contact with the material, and artistic forms are created in which the artist himself is the mediator between his idea and the created work. According to Pomodoro, sculptures should leave the museum environment and move into the centre of human life; even greater is his wish that the sculptures themselves will bring about change in the future.
