(born 1965 in Leeds, GB) Spin painting - Red Center („In a spin, the action of the world on things“), 2002, acrylic on canvas, laid down on hardboard, reverse covered with black adhesive tape, 97.5 x 75.5 cm, framed, (PS)
This spin painting has been registered by the Damien Hirst Archive under the number DHS 663. It is the extraordinary illuminating power and intensity of the colours that make this painting stand out. The effect of the apparently accidental composition is the result of a particular technique. His spin paintings are painted with acrylic on a disk which is automatically rotated, with the centrifugal force determining the composition. The result of the painting is not easy to determine. Hirst himself says that his spin paintings are based on inspiration he gained as a child when watching a programme about painting techniques on British TV. This mechanical method of painting, with an end result which is the consequence of chance, reflects the unstoppable progress of life.
