Lot No. 78

A rare pen tray, Model No. 2017,

designed by Carl Auböck, manufactured by Werkstätte Carl Auböck, Vienna, 1934, chromium plated brass, macassar veneer, porcelain inkwell, inscribed S. ZYGADLEWICZ (probably the owner’s name), height 7.2 cm, length 27.3 cm. (DR) Original condition. The Bauhaus Archives preserves a photograph depicting two “inkwells with pen trays” (inv. no. 6802/1, Gropuis estate). In 1935, Auböck described the picture in a questionnaire Walter Gropius had sent to former Bauhaus members: “Chromium plated brass inkwells combined with exotic wood, produced in 1934.” The reverse side of the photograph bears two inscriptions in pencil: “hinged cover” and “roll front”. Different from the inkwell and pen tray shown at the bottom of the photograph, the handle to the “steel roll front” is shorter in the present model and corresponds with the one outlined in the design sketch for Model No. 2017 in “Catalogue A”. Lit.: Die Kataloge der Werkstätte Carl Auböck 1925–1975, Vienna 2004, p. A/12 - Carl Auböck. Maler und Designer, Historisches Museum der Stadt Wien, 1997, pp. 27–31 - Die Metallwerkstatt am Bauhaus, Bauhaus-Archiv, 1992, 2nd unrevised edition 1998, p. 132, no. 20.
