Lot No. 35

Carl Ferdinand Sohn

(Berlin 1805–1867 Cologne) The Kidnap of Hylas, oil on canvas, 160 x 157 cm (oval format), framed, damaged (GS)

This painting is a replica of the 1830 version which was exhibited at the Berlin exhibition. The first version later made its way to the National Gallery in Berlin and was one of the institution’s war losses. However, this motif was obviously so popular that Sohn painted several replicas. Hylas was Heracles’ young and handsome lover. He accompanied Heracles as his arms bearer, joining him and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece. In Asia Minor Hylas was drawn into a spring by nymphs who were beguiled by his beauty. The inconsolable Heracles searched long for him, but without success.
