Lot No. 296

Pietro Montannini

(Perugia 1619–1689) A rocky landscape with a fort, a waterfall and a bridge, oil on canvas, 106 x 160 cm, framed,

We are grateful to John T. Spike for kindly pointing us to Montannini (personal communication to the consignor). Pietro Montannini, who was active in the workshops of Pietro da Cortona and later Salvator Rosa left to posterity, particularly in his home town of Perugia an oeuvre strongly influenced by the landscapes of Rosa. Unequivocally a follower of this artist, his compositions can be distinguished by the greater power of his conception, an altogether more monochrome coloration and a particularly concentrated cloud compositions. His figural groups are more or less direct quotations from Rosa, although Montannini's compositions, including this one, are independent, individual creations.
