Maerten van Cleve
(Antwerp 1527–1581) workshop of ; The tears of the bride, oil on panel, 31 x 40.5 cm, framed,
Provenance: Belgian private collection.
See Jan Op de Beeck, De Zotte Schilders, Moraalridders van het penseel rond Bosch, Bruegel en Brouwer, Gent 2003, p. 129, cat. no. 13.
This picture is a copy by the workshop dated around 1580 of a painting of 1576. The prototype by Maerten van Cleves was exhibited in 1934 at the Galerie P. de Boer, Amsterdam, within the context of the exhibition “Helschen en Fluweelen Brueghel”. On the iconography: a reluctant young bride is led by her bridegroom and family to the marriage bed. Explicit sexual symbols (the candle and the chamber pot in her hand) contrast with her virginal shyness. The father of the bride holds a jug up, with which he expresses that alcohol will still her tears and the bride's tension will soon disappear.
