Portrayed here is the figure of an elderly but powerful gentleman with a dignified expression which inspires confidence. He has thinning hair, his beard is neatly groomed and carefully shaped, so that it protrubes elegantly above his starched white collar. The black outer garment (a colour, which was indicative of people of the aristocracy, various professions and salesmen), underlines the dignified, elegant impression. One of his hands which is carefully delineated and accentuates the veins on the back of his hand, lies relaxed on his belt while the other hand holds a small book. The realistic depiction draws the gaze of the observer to the human aspects of the sitter and indicates his character by means of his facial features. The probing gaze which rests on the observer is emphasised by the artist. Who then is this master? We are sure that he comes from Lombardy, from a time characterised by passionate ideals, but which was already steeped in those discords which would soon become bitter reality.

Un signore anziano ma vigoroso, austero ed affabile, con capelli radi e baffi e barba ben curata e divisa in pizzi, lisci come pennelli, che aggettano sul collettone bianco inamidato. La veste, un’giuppone’ nero (colore trasversale che accomuna l’aristocrazia ai ceti professionali e mercantili) gli conferisce dignità sobria ed elegante. Una mano, delineata con cura anche nella salienza delle vene, è posata sulla cintura; l’altra regge un libricino. Ô un’immagine ‘al naturale’, l’attenzione si concentra sulla sostanza umana del personaggio, e ne esplora con minuzia la psicologia, in ogni piega del volto, negli occhi che ci scrutano con lo stesso acume che anima l’indagine del pittore. Ma chiè il maestro? Siamo certo in Lombardia, in anni fervidi di idee ma già venati dal turbamento che presto diverrà realtà amara, la peste del 1630. Ed il nostro signore, temprata canizie, appartiene a quella ‘galleria di gente civile, poco in vista, con cariche pubbliche piuttosto defilate’ (Alessandro Morandotti), che di diritto entrerà nei ricordi del Manzoni. Di tale esplorazione sottile, che della umana commedia fissa sembianti esemplari, maestro è Daniele Crespi, specie nella ‘sequenza dei ritratti in piccoloö (Francesco Frangi), e Giovanni Testori ha con acume indagato le sue ‘analogie stringenti con la straordinaria capacità ritrattistica del Manzoni; quella lucidità che lascia intendere, sotto l’immenso equilibrio, o disegno, che regge la storia, tutte le debolezze, le miserie e gli abissi dell’animo umano’. presente dipinto.
