We are grateful to Dr. Christina Pucher, who has confirmed this painting as a collaborative work of Franz de Paula Ferg and Maximilian Joseph Schinnagl (certificate of January 2010). This painting combines those characteristics which define Austrian landscape painting of the Baroque: the development of Netherlandish traditions in terms of coloration, the technically fine handling and the new spectrum of motifs. Maximilian Schinnagl who was influenced by Joseph Orient and Anton Faistenberger also worked as a collaborator for the Imperial court painter, Martin van Meyten. He was one of the leading landscape painters of Austria. His paintings ended up in the Imperial gallery and in ecclesiastical and princely collections throughout Europe. Entirely in the tradition of the great Dutchmen, his work enjoyed as much popularity as that of Franz de Paula Ferg, with whom he collaborated on this work. The narrative placement of very lively figural groups is a typical element in the work of this artist. The present work is a rare example of a collaboration between these artistic personalities who are so important in Austrian art history of the 18th century.
