(Antwerp master of the 16th century) The Adoration of the Kings, oil on panel, 40 x 29 cm, framed,
Provenance: Belgian private collection.
For a very similar composition see the 'Adoration of the Kings' attributed to Coffermans which was sold by Marc-Arthur Kohn, Paris, on 31 May 2001 as lot 4. Marcellus Coffermans took his cue from the great Flemish painters of the 15th century. Thieme -Becker says that his mostly small-format paintings were always carefully, almost pedantically inscribed when they were made. It continues, “The strange thing about the artist, Coffermans, is that he apparently was able to succeed at a time when Frans Floris and Marten de Vos were the main exponents, rather than P. Brueghel...”.
