Stefano Maria Legnani, called Il Legnanino
![]({f:uri.resource(path: 'Images/no_image_{f:cObject(typoscriptObjectPath: 'config.language')}.webp', extensionName: 'dorotheum')})
(Mailand 1660–1715) The apostle, James the Greater, oil on canvas, 73.9 x 71.8 cm, in an original carved gilded frame of the 17th century,
We are grateful to Dr. John T. Spike, who has confirmed that this is a typical work by Legnani (e-mail to the consignors of 20 January 2010). Trained in the workshop of his father, Ambrogio Legnani, Il Legnanino was first employed in the workshop of Carlo Cignani in Milan, then later by Carlo Maratta in Rome. His legacy inclues altar paintings and frescoes in many of churches in Milan, Novara (where he produced the important fresco in the cathedral cupola) and Rome. He also worked for the House of Savoye entirely in the manner of artists working in the Bolognese Classicist tradition. His work also features naturalistic elements, as can be seen in this picture of St. James in his lined face and the prominent throat musculature.
