Lot No. 195

Nicolas De Largillière

(Paris 1656- 1746), workshop of Portrait of Marie Anne Mancini Duchess of Bouillon, oil on canvas, 82 x 66 cm, framed

Exhibition: Firenze, Loggia Rucellai, Omaggio a Leon Battista Alberti, April 1991, catalogo mostra, a cura di M. Cecilia Fabbri, p. 24.

The identification of the sitter is based on a comparison with a painting by Nicolas Largillière, which is to be found in the Louvre (see M. C. Fabbri 1991, p. 24). The terminus ante quem for the dating of the picture is 1714, in which Marie Anne Mancini died at the age of 68. It is probable that this painting and the one in the Louvre come from the same workshop and are close in age, even if the Duchess is rather more corpulent and is depicted in a more magnificent gown. The Louvre picture which is entirely in the hand of the artist and the present picture which is a workshop collaboration, were evidently planned for different patrons .
