We are grateful to Frau Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD, The Hague, for identifying the artist (personal communication dated February 2010). We also thank Prof. David Levine, University of Southern Connecticut, for his help in cataloguing the picture. The treatment and coloration of this work link it with the works of Karel Dujardin and Jan Asselijn. Jan van den Hecke, master of the Antwerp St. Lukasgilde, resided for many years in Rome, where he produced landscapes and still lifes for the Duke of Bracciano. In 1659 he returned to Antwerp. The stadhoulder, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm commissioned him to produce a comprehensive series of floral still lifes.
