(Florence 1711–1767) A sculptor in his workshop, oil on canvas, 93 x 72 cm, framed,
We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri who has identified the present painting as a work by Giuseppe Zocchi (certificate, January 2010). Trained in Florence, Zocchi was a protégé of the Marchese Andrea Gerini, who financed the artist‘s education in Rome, Bologna, Milan, and Venice. Apart from the famous vedute of his native town, he also did a small number of portraits and several capriccios with ruins. The present painting seems to reflect his Roman experience, since the sculpture in the right foreground is the famous Belvedere Torso.
