(Naples c. 1610–1685) The Conversion of St Paul, oil on canvas, 123 x 179, framed
Andrea de Lione was a versatile artist who was held in high esteem by his patrons. His art reflects the cultivated and elegant society in seventeenth-century Naples. A student of Belisario Corinzio, the artist entered the workshop of Aniello Falcone, where he met Salvator Rosa, Micco Spadaro, and Carlo Coppola. His battle scenes steaming with gun smoke, expressive facial features, and naturalistic elements are primarily influenced by his teacher Aniello Falcone.
The attribution of the present work to Andrea de Lione has been fully endorsed by Prof. Riccardo Lattuada on the basis of a photograph.
