Lot No. 357

Felice (Leppa) Zennaro

(Pellestrina/Venice 1833–1926 Milan) The First Steps, signed F. Zennaro, oil on canvas, 100.5 x 78.5 cm, framed, (W)

Felice Zennaro: The artist was a pupil at the Academies in Venice and Milan where his primary activities were artistic. Many of his works can be found today in Italian museums such as the Galleria d’arte moderna in Milan. Felice Zennaro is known for his works dealing with the subject of the Wars of Italian Independence, culminating in the Risorgimento. He also produced numerous paintings of children and interiors during his artistic career although these too included patriotic symbolism. This work, “I primi passi”, may also be regarded as the symbolic representation of the “first steps” taken by the newly unified Italian state. Exhibited and illustrated: This work is doubtless the painting shown in the exhibition Mostra della Pittura Lombarda dell’ Ottocento (Milan 1900) with the title as above. The painting is also catalogued in Agostino Comanducci’s Dizionario illustrato dei Pittori, Disegnatori e Incisori Italiani Moderni e contemporani, IV ed., Vol V, p. 3454.
