Giuseppe Bernardino Bison

(Palmanova in Friaul 1762–1844 Milan) View of St Mark’s Square with decorative figures and the Basilica in the background, oil on canvas, laid down on panel, 21 x 29.5 cm, framed, (W)

Giuseppe Bernadino Bison From 1777, after his studies with Girolamo Romani, Bison commenced training with the painter Palazzi, also in Venice. From 1779-89 he studied at the Academy under Constantino Cedini and with Antonio Mauro. His friendship with the architect Giovanni Antonio Selva assisted Bison in securing various commissions as a stage designer at the theatres in Treviso, Venice, Trieste and Gorizia. Bison decorated numerous palaces throughout the Veneto and was later active in Udine and Trieste. In 1831 Bison settled in Milan where, from 1833-1842, he showed his predominantly small format vedute and genre paintings, which were clearly influenced by the Dutch style, in numerous exhibitions at the Accademia di Brera.
