Johann Conrad Seekatz
(Grünstadt 1719–1768 Darmstadt) Two maids tease a sleeping winegrower, signed and dated on the reverse: SKtz (ligated) fct. Darmstadt.1761, oil on panel, 28.5 x 22.5 cm, framed
Provenance: formerly in the ownership of the Kings of Württemberg (inventory number and stamp with the royal coat of arms on the reverse). This pair of paintings, as yet unpublished, is an important addition to the oeuvre of the painter from Darmstadt. These cheerful Rococo scenes were either produced as pendants or are part of a series depicting the seasons. Ernst Emmerling has a similar series consisting of four images, also on panel and with identical dimensions, in the collection of the Castle at Dessau (E. Emmerling, Johann Conrad Seekatz, Grünstadt 1991, WVZ-Nr. 190–193, p. 107f., ill. p. 118). The provenance of the pair is of particular important, since they came from an important collection of art owned by the Kings of Württemberg. Pendant to the following lot.
