Cornelis Saftleven
(Gorkum 1607–1681 Rotterdam) Landscape with shepherds and grazing animals, signed and dated 1651 lower left, oil on panel, 47 x 63 cm, fr
We are grateful to Dr Wolfgang Schulz, Berlin, who has confirmed that this is a “lovely work by Cornelis Saftleven” and that he will “incorporate it into the supplement volume to his book on the artist” (personal telephone call and e-mail correspondence with the consignor). Cornelis Saftleven was a multi-faceted Rotterdam painter. At first he painted still-life type stable interiors after the manner of Hendrick Sorgh and Pieter de Bloot. Later in his career Saftleven turned to painting landscapes with shepherds and their flocks, which are reminiscent of the works of Govert Camphuysen and Aelbert Cuyp.
