Lot No. 226 #

Jan Baptist van der Straeten

(Antwerp before 1671–1731) Two architectural capriccios, a sophisticated group in front of a palace; and an elegant group in front of the loggia of a palace, oil on canvas, each 67 x 84 cm, framed

In the RKD, in The Hague, there are photos (nos. 39305 and 42069) of two smaller versions of these motifs, one of which is signed and dated 1717. Jan Baptist van der Straeten designed opulent architectural fantasies using a brown palette, as here, rather than gaudy colours, which gives them their characteristically atmospheric coherence. Trained under Jacob Peeters, Straeten, who worked exclusively in the genre of architectural capriccios, established himself as an independent artist in Antwerp. Following Italian precedents, particularly Codazzi in his compositions, his capriccios were very popular. He almost always painted terraces, gardens and fountains with a typical Baroque love of opulence against palace-like architectural backdrops. His figural groups were painted as a rule, indeed probably in this painting as well, by the Antwerp artist, Balthasar van den Bossche.
