Lot No. 199

Balthasar van den Bossche

(Antwerp 1681 – 1715) In the painter’s studio; At the doctor’s, pendants, both signed, oil on canvas, 56.5 x 68.5 cm, framed, (2)

Both of these paintings are comparable with the pictures in the Doria Pamphili Collection in Rome, which had been attributed by Sestieri (see G. Sestieri 1942, pp. 354–355) and van Puyvelde (see L. van Puyvelde, La peinture flamande à Rome, 1950, p. 214) to van den Bossche, but are now thought to be the work of his teacher, Gerard Thomas (Antwerp 1633 – 1720/1). The compositions of the pictures, which are anything other than realistic, are reminiscent of representations of the cabinet d’amateur, a genre in which many Antwerp painters of the 17th century specialised. The celestial globe depicted in both paintings also appears in the pictures Gerard Thomas as an allusion to the harmony of nature.
