Jean Baptiste Monnoyer

(Lille 1636–1699 London) A still life of flowers in a sculpted stone vase, oil on canvas, 65 x 54 cm, framed

Accepted by Fred Meijer, RKD, The Hague, as an authentic, autograph work by Monnoyer. Monnoyer, who initially drew his inspirations from his model De Heems, was one of the most significant flower painters of his period. He started his career in Paris in 1655 and succeeded in being admitted to the Paris Academiy in 1663. His patrons included members of the court and the higher aristocracy. In 1685 he followed the former ambassador Lord Montagu to London, where he was enormously successful and was entrusted with commissions by the queens Mary II and Anne. Monnoyer created masterly compositions imbued with a subtle sense of colour and a splendid elegance.
