Benedetto Caliari


(Verona 1538 – 1598), attributed to Allegorical Scene: The personification of Venice, crowning the personifications of Architecture and Commerce (Mercury) with the assistance of Hercules and the Three Muses, oil on canvas, 155 x 230 cm, unframed

Benedetto Caliari was the brother of Paolo Caliari, called Paolo Veronese, and the latter’s student and collaborator. He assisted his famous brother in the completion of numerous works, particularly in the execution of perspectives and ornament, where his particular talents lay. Original works by his hand are to be found in Venetian churches, in the Palazzo Vescovile in Treviso, as well as in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (a Birth of Christ). We are grateful to Prof. Egidio Martini for the attribution of the present painting to Benedetto Caliari (written communication, May 2009). Provenance: Viennese private collection.
