Lot No. 20

Francesco Zuccarelli

(Pitigliano 1702–1788 Florence) Mountainous landscape with a bridge, a stone figure, and shepherds, oil on canvas, 94 x 133.5 cm, framed

Provenance: German private collection. Literature: Federica Spadotto, Francesco Zuccarelli, Milan 2007, no. 410. Dr. Spadotto about the hitherto unpublished painting: Zuccarelli was an extraordinarily successful landscapist. He had come to live in Venice in 1730, where he met the famous consul Joseph Smith. Furnished with recommendations from Smith, Zuccarelli undertook his first journey to London in 1742, where he completed commissions for aristocratic collectors and for the opera house. Further journeys to England were to follow. In 1763 the painter was admitted to the Venice Academy and in 1772 was elected its president. Like Marco Ricci, with whom he was frequently associated, Zuccarelli painted ideal landscapes animated with mythological, biblical, or Arcadian figures. Zuccarelli is a typical exponent of elegant 18th-century Venetian landscape painting.
