Lot No. 7

Pisan Master, c. 1380

Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child and Saint Catherine and Saint Lawrence on gold ground (triptych), tempera on panel, 81.5 x 149.5 cm, framed

The anonymous master of the present work borrowed the group of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child from a panel by Francesco Traini (active in Pisa between 1321 and 1369), now in the Princeton University Art Museum, USA. Provenance: sale, R. Lepke, Berlin, 27 Oct. 1925, lot 140; private collection, Cologne; private collection, Vienna; sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 7 Nov. 1991, lot 20; South German private collection. Literature: Millard Meiss, Francesco Traini, Washington 1983, p. 124, fig. 128 (reproduced in the reverse direction / pubblicato al rovescio). Millard Meiss points out that the anonymous painter of the present work was strongly influenced by Francesco Traini, his senior by one generation. The painting is a characteristic example of artistic production in Pisa during the second half of the 14th century. Millard Meiss sostiene che il dipinto qui presentato sia stato fortemente influenzato dall’opera di Francesco Traini, e che rappresenti un tipico esempio della produzione artistica pisana della seconda metà del Trecento.
