Ando Hiroshige

Ando Hiroshige - Clocks, Asian Art, Metalwork, Faience, Folk Art, Sculpture

(Japan 1797-1858) Goj-san tsugi meisho zue. Nana (Series of views of 53 tourist attractions), sheet 7, ‘Fujisawa, Nanki no Matsubara hidari no Fuji’ (Fujisawa; Fuji to the left near Nanki no Matsubara), signature ‘Hiroshige hitsu’, aratame censor’s seal, date seal beneath the signature cartouche: 7th month in the year of the rabbit (1855), publisher’s seal (lower right): Tsutaya Kochizô (Kôkeidô), coloured woodblock print. This series, consisting of 55 sheets is also known as Vertical Tokaido. This sheet is an impression from the original woodblocks (the wood grain can be seen in the grey foreground, such as is evident in original impressions). The corner broken away at the upper end of the line of the left-hand border and the unprinted (white) areas around the cartouches indicate that this is a later impression. The colours are also very muted. This sheet is very similar to one in the Honolulu Museum of Art (object number 10208). Slightly spotted and creased, fine album sheet, slight damage to margins, 36 x 24.7 (sheet size), (CT)

We are grateful to Mr Gordon Friese for assisting with the cataloguing of this sheet.
