(Edo 1839-1892) series: Kôkoku nijushi-kô (24 remarkable events from Imperial Japan), ‘Wake (no) Kiyomaro’ (The nobleman, Wakeno Kiyomaro (733-799)). This sheet is the 1st in this series, text in the cartouche by Ryutei Tanehiko II. Depicted here is Wake not Kiyoma-ro receiving an oracle from a divinity in a shrine. Signed Taiko Yoshitoshi (reference to first edition), seal of Taiso (possible reference to first edition), publisher: Tusa Genshichi (possible reference to first edition), the bright colours also speak in favour of this, not possible to establish details of edition, easily decipherable bokashi in the cartouche, 1881 (?), oban tate-e, fine album sheet, very good impression and colours, black lacquer, sheet margins slightly damaged beyond the image area, 37.2 x 25.2 cm, (CT)
