Zeppelin, titled "The Schwaben", signed A. Bauer, oil on panel, 22 x 33 cm, framed (Rei)
The airship Schwaben was built by the Luftschiftsbau Zeppelin Corporation and used for air transport within Germany. It took its maiden flight on 26 June 1911, going into service three weeks later on 16 July 1911. The airship was one of the first successful commercial Zeppelins to transport passengers. During its 218 flights it transported 1,553 passengers, including Crown Prince Wilhelm and his wife. The Schwaben was described as a lucky airship, being more successful than its predecessor, also operated by the Deutschen Luftschifffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft (DELAG). On 28 June 1912 the Schwaben was buffeted by strong gusts of wind, caught fire, and burnt on the airfield in Düsseldorf, after roughly one year of service.
