Jacob and his twin Esau, the sons of Isaac and Rebecca are represented in the middle of the drawing; in the following scene the hostile brothers are depicted in the lower left margin of the sheet on the steps where Jacob is holding a torch. At the upper left Jacob can be seen on his ladder to heaven; he is depicted under an archway, where he is erecting an altar on the spot where God had appeared to him („Bethel“) In the main scene Jacob is meeting sisters Leah (with the jug on her head) and Rachel, Jacob’s bride, who he is bringing home in the final scene of the sheet (at the archway at the left)
