... As a painter, he was not a mystic, psychologist, epic poet, or a romantic. His soul does not yearn for the land of the Greeks. He does not look for beauty outside worldly reality; rather, he feels it and sees it in the reality of the world that can be perceived with the senses...
His images do not present themselves as something that is constructed and artificial, but rather as something which has developed and grown, something artistic. They contain fewer problematic aspects than the work of other contemporaneous painters, but in exchange, they contain more substance that arouses aesthetic feelings of pleasure – which is called life.
