Lot No. 81

Enrico Baj *

(Milan 1924–2003)
Montagna, 1957, signed and dated, dated 57 and signed again on the reverse, oil on canvas, 164 x 131 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection (aquired directly from the artist)

Literature:
Arti Visive, 1958 with ill.
E. Crispolti, Catalogo generale dell’opera di Enrico Baj, Bolaffi Editore, Turin 1973, no. 370 with ill.

In an interview in the year 2000, Baj stressed how profoundly the poetic spirit of De rerum natura influenced him in the early stage of Nuclearism. Lucretius, a follower of the atomism of Democritus and Epicurus, “was the greatest literary proponent of an atomistic conception of the world, and I enjoyed illustrating this...”.

Indeed, the Mountains’ cycle seems to channel the poetic spirit of Lucretius: in the convulsions of atomised matter built with splashes and drips of colour, Baj “finds” and outlines anthropomorphic surfaces, faces and vegetation, inchoate signs of creation under an anthropomorphic sun, generator of life. This reference to the nature of the cosmos and to the origin of the world is formulated with the language of Informel that dominated those years.
