Gotthard Graubner * - Post-War and Contemporary Art I

(Erlbach, Vogtland, 1930–2013 Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia)
Untitled, 1970, signed and dated Graubner 1970 on the reverse, oil and acrylic on perlon over foam on canvas, 55 x 46 x 10 cm

Provenance:

Ketterer, 5 December 2015, lot 931
acquired from the above by the present owner

“Curiosity drives me to find out how far the medium of painting is able to transport itself.”
Gotthard Graubner

Gotthard Graubner’s colour space bodies appear like a manifestation of “the infinite”, with which the viewer of the painting is confronted, which embraces him, and which he can meditatively enter. The spaces of light are immeasurable – with his corporeal image-organisms Graubner captures the light and lets it reverberate. Colour thereby becomes an emanation of light, it is worked into the colour space body by Gotthard Graubner in an extremely diluted form, whereupon it has to dry again and enter the three-dimensional body afresh, until the desired light effect enters the space. The individual colour as a visually perceptible pigment is, as in the case with the small colour space body, only visible in multiple shades on the margins, and yet, the countless traces of many colours create the light-space effect intended by the artist.
