Portrait of a Polish nobleman, traditionally identified as John III Sobieski, King of Poland, dressed as an Ottoman sultan,
oil on canvas, 50.5 x 42 cm, framed

Jan Tricius (also Tretko or Tricjust) studied with Jacob Jordaens in Antwerp and with Nicolas Poussin in Paris (1640–42) and Gdansk. King John III Sobieski granted him the privilege of becoming court painter in Cracow (see Jan K. Ostrowski, Mechanisms of Contact between Polish and European Baroque, in: Land of the Winged Horsemen: Art in Poland, 1572–1764, Yale 1999, p. 63).
