Ottmar Elliger I
(Gothenburg 1633–1679 Berlin)

Ottmar Elliger was born in Sweden, and according to Houbraken, travelled all the way from Copenhagen to Antwerp in order to train with Daniel Seghers. Elliger’s earliest painting dates from 1653 and in 1654 he is recorded to have been in Copenhagen again. He married in Amsterdam in 1660, two years later he was in Dordrecht and then in 1665 in Hamburg. He finally settled in Berlin in 1670, where he became court painter of Frederick William of Brandenburg, the ‘Grand Elector’.
A comparable painting, signed and dated 1667, was with Adam Williams Fine Art, New York (2009/10).
