Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen II, a pair (2)

[Saleroom Notice]
Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen II, a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1664–1730)
A pair of still lifes with tulips, peonies, crocuses and other flowers in a vase on a stone ledge,
both monogrammed lower left,
oil on canvas, each 48 x 40.5 cm, framed, a pair (2)

Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen II was the son and namesake of the still life painter G. P. Verbruggen I. Having started his artistic career as a pupil and collaborator in his father’s studio, he became master of the Antwerp guild of St. Luke in 1677 and their dean in 1691. Following bankruptcy in 1703, the artist fled to Holland, settling in The Hague around 1705/1706. From 1706 until 1723 he worked in collaboration with the portrait and history painter Mathieu Terwesten (1670–1757). In 1723 Verbruggen returned to Antwerp, where he started a new cooperation with his father. Their large decorative compositions are often being confused, although the son’s brushstrokes are heavier. Verbruggen often signed ‘Gasper Pedro Verbrüggen’.
