Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel I

Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel I - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1564–1635) and (Brussels 1568–1625 Antwerp)
A winter landscape with a village and travellers on a path,
oil on panel, 45.5 x 74.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Paris (until 2013)

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the present painting as a joint work by Joos de Momper (landscape) and Jan Brueghel I (figures and animals). A written certificate is available (June 2017, in copy).

Ertz wrote: ‘Both Jan the Elder’s staffage and Momper’s still economical use of oxblood red for the house walls in the middle ground suggest a period of execution around 1610–15. These winter landscapes are amongst the finest achievements created by the two painter friends. In their many joint works, Josse de Momper always executed the landscape while Jan Brueghel the Elder (or, after the latter’s death, his son, frequently Jan Brueghel the Younger) always painted the figures. Their pictures, although made by two painters, present themselves as wonderfully consistent and homogeneous as if done by a single hand.’
