Giovanni Fattori

Giovanni Fattori - 19th Century Paintings

(Livorno 1825–1908 Florence)
„Militari in perlustrazione“, c. 1900, signed Gio. Fattori,
inscribed on the reverse “A Zaffiro Borgomanero/Renzo Nannicini/4 Agosto 1909”, oil on panel, 19 x 32.5 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.

A certificate issued by Archivio Baboni per la pittura Italiana del XIX secolo with the number 1022-F is available.

The painting showed here, The Scouts, can be dated to the late 19th century.
The composition of the image is typical for Fattori: the scouts are finely articulated and located in front of a landscape that is broken up by trees and fields. It does not possess an epic quality: rather, its rhythmic nature makes it appear commonplace and peaceful. With his usual masterly hand, Fattori manages to integrate the figures of the soldiers in this composition into a landscape which appears to dissolve into the transparent fog and mist in the distance.

We are grateful to Dr. Andrea Baboni for confirming the authenticity and for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this work.
