Lot No. 40 -

César Pattein

César Pattein - 19th Century Paintings

(Steenvoorde 1850–1931 Hazenbrouck)
Mischievous children, signed, dated César Pattein.1910, oil on canvas, 151 x 201 cm, framed, (GG)

César Pattein painted scenes of rustic life focusing on the happy times of the day with children laughing, playing and forgetting the toils of the hard day’s work.
He would very often execute the landscape en plein air and paint the figures in his studio.
He was born in 1850 to a family of farmers in the north of France. He first studied engraving under Guillaume Cabasson (1814-1884). In 1878, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille in the atelier of Alphonse Colas (1818-1887). From 1884 he studied under Jules Breton (1827-1906), a painter of rural landscapes who had a great influence on him.
Through his participation in the annual Salon in Paris, he managed to establish himself to the public as one of the leading French artists.
The present lot is an excellent example of the exquisite delicacy with which Pattein captures the details of the characters and their graceful gestures. A group of children enjoys a simple game and carefree smile in the French countryside.
