Circle of Frans Hals
(Antwerp 1580/85–1666 Haarlem)
Portrait of a nobleman,
oil on canvas, 71.1 x 55.9 cm, framed
We are grateful to Nadja Garthoff from the RKD, The Hague, for her help in cataloguing the present painting.
The immediacy of portrayal is reminiscent of the work of Frans Hals (1580/85-1666), who is counted amongst the most significant portrait painters of his time. The close study of Hals’s portraiture was decisive for the drafting of the present work, which is similar to the portrait of Tieleman Roosterman (1634, Cleveland, The Cleveland Museum of Art). Comparing the present work to the aforementioned painting, as well as to other portraits by Hals, allows us to establish undeniable similarities. The visible brushstroke, the soft curling lines of the brush appearing clear on the surface, particularly suggest that the author of the present painting studied Hals’s oeuvre in detail, and modelled his own painterly style on that of the Master himself. Hence, the Portrait of a Gentleman is attributable to an artist from the immediate circle of Frans Hals; it could therefore reasonably be dated to the second half of the seventeenth century.
